Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
» My hookah isn't working properly, what am I doing wrong? First check the bowl and make sure you haven't packed the shisha in too tightly. The shisha out to be gently broken up and sprinkled into the bowl up until the level at the top, any more than this will mean you are compressing it in when you fit the screen which will not help the hookah to smoke properly.
Make sure that the charcoal is hot enough and that it is not covered in ash. If it is you must use a pair of tongs to gently tap the ash off the charcoal into the hookah tray and then place it back into the head.
Make sure that all of the connecting parts of your hookah pipe fit snugly together. This is essential to the smooth movement of smoke throughout the hookah. Check the gaskets and make sure they have not been burnt by the charcoal in the tray.
Make sure the hoses are connected properly and are pulling well. This is the main cause of a hookah not smoking properly. If there are more hoses attached than are being used then make sure these are removed and that the holes they leave behind are plugged with wire stoppers.
» What are herbal shisha blends? Herbal shisha blends, often also called herbal hydro, are hookah smoking mixes that do not contain any tobacco or nicotine. They have always been around but are now entering the marketplace in greater numbers due to the public's increased awareness of the perils of tobacco addiction. These blends often substitute the tobacco with another leafy material such as blends of herbs and more recently tea leaves. The substitute leaves are treated in similar ways to the tobacco of traditional hookah smoking blends in order to give them that distinctive hookah flavour.
» Lately when I use my hookah pipe I get little black bits in my mouth, I wash my hookah regularly and always use fresh tobacco but can't figure out where this horrible black material is coming from. It sounds like you have also washed a hookah hose that was not washable and that is where your black stuff is coming from. Hookah hoses come in three varieties, unwashable, washable and rust proof. The reason why some hookah hoses are unwashable is that they contain a metal coil inside them that rusts when you run water through the hose. The black little pieces you speak of are most likely coming from the rusted insides of your hose which you must now discard an purchase a new one. Washable hoses are manufactured in the same way as washable ones, with one added difference, the coil is given a waterproof coating so that it doesn't rust as quickly. It still will rust eventually though so if you have been using you hookah for a long time and washing all its components, including the hose, regularly then the hose you have may actually be a washable one that has slowly rusted over time and over many washes. If this is the case then your best bet when considering your next hose is to get a rust proof hookah hose, these contain no coils inside whatsoever and can be washed after each and every hookah smoking session. There are not many of these around and some of them feel quite cheap due to the fact that they are manufactured completely out of plastic. The best one, without a doubt, that is currently available online is the Nammor Hookah hose which comes in two lengths, is of excellent quality and has a great draw.
» What is all this I have been hearing about electronic shisha coal? Is this a real product and how does it work? Believe it or not electronic shisha coal is a real product that is available out there. Basically instead of lighting real coals to go on your hookah you have these little metal coals that plug into an adapter and produce the heat needed to get your hookah smoking electronically. A very strange choice, you might think, but perhaps they are intended for people who worry about the tar or carbon monoxide that the charcoal releases through the smoke. As you might imagine these little electronic coals are manufactured in China. They do take a while to light up, which might defeat the purpose of having an electronic alternative, and when they do heat up they don't seem to produce as much smoke as their carbon equivalents. On the other hand they bring out the flavour of your shisha tobacco quite excellently, so if you are a fan of flavour and not smoke then definitely give these strange little coals a try. If on the other hand you like your clouds of smoke but are still intrigued then you might want to try using two of these little electronic coals. The only real bother with them is the adapter that come with each, and having wires poking out from under your windscreen does seem to detract from the authenticity of the experience.
